An audio exhibition
What will the city sound like in the future? The Museum of Architecture invited the public to an exhibition devoted to the effects our senses have on the urban environment. “The architecture of the senses” exhibition consisted of two parts: What will Slussen sound like in the future? as well as a permanent audio and light installation at Mariatorget in Stockholm.
The exhibition inspired questions about the city and our senses. What does it mean to see and hear? We see what we cannot hear, and hear what we cannot see. Does this matter? A key question is how we can manage the sounds of the city using sustainable urban development. We wanted to make visitors listen to the city and become aware of the sounds that surround us. Today cities are designed based on the visual. Perhaps urban planning should also be based on what we can hear? Perhaps it is time to call for acoustic town planners?
