Water planning for lake Vombsjön

Lake Vombsjön is bisected by three municipalities, Lund, Hörby and Sjöbo. Parts of its catchment area is situated in a fourth municipality, Tomelilla. The lake has an abundant bird life as well as people who come to swim and fish.

There is intensive farming in the lakes catchment area and periodically there are issues with algal blooms. Sydvatten is using the lake raw water catchment for water production. This water is filtered into the ground water storage using nearby pools and then it gets absorbed into the wells. The purpose of this project has been to identify how all of the different interests affect the quality of the water in the lake and to study what kinds of actions can be implemented in order to ensure the lakes function as potable water catchment area on a long-term basis.

The work group running this project has consisted of representatives from Sydvatten, Tyréns, AquaP and DHI Sweden. The project is in accordance with the principles of the general directive and a reference group of interested parties concerning the water catchment area is tied to the project. In order to get a general view of the data and be able to analyse connections between cause and effect, we have designed a computer model of the catchment area. It is partly an overall hydrological model (based on MIKE BASIN) that is also used to describe the transporting of nutrients, partly a pesticide model (REXTOX) used for calculating the supply of pesticides to the surface waters. An estimation of potential protective measures is made based on the results of the model and then they are simulated in the model.
