ESS - Local Plan and Environmental Impact Assessment

Local Plan and Environmental Impact Assessment for the ESS (European Spallation Source) in Lund.

During 2012-2013, Tyréns was commissioned to draw up the local plan with associated environmental impact assessment as well as associated investigation for the ESS in Lund. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is an international research project that aims to create a multi-disciplinary research centre based on the world’s most powerful neutron source, which can be likened to a gigantic microscope.

Tyréns’ commission is to prepare a local plan, environmental impact assessment, and associated studies for the ESS in Lund. The local plan is intended, within the specified planning area, to test the appropriateness of a research installation based on neutron scattering, European Spallation Source - ESS AB, and complementary activities that support research and research facilities in Brunnshög, such as a research institute, temporary researcher accommodation, branch buildings for universities and business schools, university facilities for Lund University, offices and service functions. The planning area also includes a location for a receiving station for electricity and an existing wind turbine.

During the project process, there was a major focus on environmental issues and minimising the installation's impact on the environment. Important issues to consider included the impact on the landscape and the cultural environment, since the building is very large, for example, the accelerator is 400 metres long.

In connection with the preparation of a local plan and environmental impact assessment, studies were carried out in the following areas: Risk, stormwater, noise, natural environment, landscape, transport, air, contaminated land, cultural environment & geotechnics, and socio-economic consequences.
